| Keith Bardwell, refused to marry interracial couples. Bardwell resigned after 34 yrs. in office. The couple have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Bardwell and his wife. Their attorney, Laura C, said the resignation won't stop the lawsuit. Did Mr. Bardwell not get the 1967 civil rights memo or just felt his racist bias was acceptable and above reproach. Since he had the power it also gave him the right to discriminate no? Or was it just his moral conscience and personal right to push his biases on others? |

I was reading this and debating about posting it - I have to say that I have mixed (no pun intended) feelings about this - while I think this guy is an idiot - doesnt he have the right to refuse to marry anyone that he chooses
He is a business owner - basically - and he has the right to refuse service to anyone he wants -
I am a notary and I have the right to choose to refuse to marry someone if I want to
I personally have NO problem with inter-racial marriage I think it should be mandatory - eventually we would all be the same color and the race card would be moot -
and he NEVER said the could not OR should not marry he just said that he would not marry them - granted his reasons were assinine - but still he did not stand in the way of them getting married and even provided them with another justice's name to marry them ......
I think it is a slippery slope
and please do not jump me and call me racist - I absolutely am not -
I just have mixed feelings about this - |

I see what you're saying but really, does someone have a right to refuse service to someone based just on skin color alone? I would think not. Maybe if the came in shirtless or barefoot. |

but why doesnt he - what if he said he would not marry them because they are jewish and catholic - would you say "does he have the right to refuse based on religion alone"
It is my understanding that Rabi's refuse to marry interfaith couples - what is the difference? and there may be other religions that may refuse as well -
again I say - he did not tell them they should not or could not - just that he would not do it ......

how do you know he didnt - how do you know he didnt have everything to have a beautiful wedding spot -
and suppose the couple was a white jewish gal and a black catholic man - and they went to him and he said - sorry dont marry inter faith couples and never mentioned the race - would it have been ok then
this guy has a business that marries people - and again I say as a business owner he has the right to make his own rules
Prime example CHICK FLIET they will not allow you to have face piercings - guys cant have earings - and there are other stipulations that you must follow to work there -
so ever business owner has the right to make his own rules
do I think this guy is an idiot YES I DO - but his business his rules |

ok well I will give you that one - he was elected - repeatedly - with people knowing this was his practice - and being an employee of the state - you are correct he is in violation of the civil rights act -
and please do not get me wrong - I certainly think that he should be gone - but I also still think that if he was a notary that he would have this right

1967 Federal Law, said he didnt have the right to refuse. As a Justice of the Peace for the state...he's not a small business owner, he is a state employee.
It just amazes me that people still like him believe this shiit in 2009.
You can't fix stupid... |

He discriminated against color period. It's not just a black and white world. Just becasue he did it equally doesn't mean he didn't discriminate. He doesn't have a right to say whether or not someone should get married based on the color of their skin. Would he have married a hispanic and white or an asian and black. Don't know. The article I read said he's turned at least 4 couples away in the last 2 1/2 years because they were mixed race. It didn't state what ethnicity they were. |

Well I think we can all agree that he is better of NOT working for the state and that LA is rid of him - sortta - he can still do or not do marriages if he has the proper docs
and I agree that dealing with this in 2009 is NUTS - now if it were 1969 and it was not as wide spread - worring about "mixed race children" may have been a concern - I dont know I was 12 - and it was a new thing - but today being mixed race is normal - and like I said I think it should be mandatory - eventually we would all be mixed and there would be no race card to play for anyone

I don't care if he WAS a private business owner, he still cannot discriminate based upon race. That is a defined form of discrimination punishable by law.
But this, this bothers me a little...
quote: Originally posted by k10602

That is about as sickeningly politically-correct a comment as I've ever heard. Despite the obvious destruction of cultures, this would pose a massive problem for me.
I've slept with many races of women and I happen to vastly prefer Caucasian women. When I say that, I mean my body absolutely LOVES them over any other. To me they smell better, they look better, they taste better, they feel better, more loving, more creative, more exciting, etc etc etc.
Mmmmm. I totally agree with my old neighborhood pimp... NOTHING beats sex with a white woman! Softer hair... I need a few moments. Be right back...
Now you can yell 'racist' at me all day long, but ye shall never fool my sex organ, which has proven as reliable and trustworthy a best friend as I could have ever dreamed of. It has always stood by me when I needed it most. It knows exactly what it likes and I would dare any attorney to prove otherwise, especially a hot blonde one.
I would love to be hauled into court after I violated this law. After I trot out my witnesses, I would give a completely new meaning to "taking the stand".
I could never marry a black woman, because I do not know how to "do hair". I could never marry a latina woman, because I refuse to eat anything I can't pronounce. I could never marry an asian woman, because I put my shoes on the furniture. I could never marry a filipino, because my dad's name is Philip. That's just weird. I could never marry a purple woman, because she is dead. But I can and hopefully WILL marry a white woman, because I have a VISA card and Wal-Mart is right down the street.
However, in order to comply with this proposed law, I am fully willing to continue 'diversifying' my bidness and maybe break my internal chains. Free Willy! Free Willy! Let my peephole go! |

| Our local church went to Mississippi 2 years ago on a missionary trip and ran into a 'whites only' public pool...They were helping rebuild a black church that was burnt down...I was blown away that could possibly exist in 2007, but there it was, being told to me by a child reporting on their trip...Racism is far from gone, if only it was that flagrant so it could be eliminated... |

| If Gay mariage was legall and this guy refused it would be discrimination yet most of these people would be backing his choice. Though I do not agree with this guys ignorance one bit, I find it hard to agree that he shouldn't have the right to not do something he does not believe in. I wouldnt expect a church to marry a gay couple if they so chose not to... this guy may be an ignorant fool but he's still allowed his freedom to think like an ignorant fool. |

When he is a judge for the state he doesn't have that right. He is supposed to uphold the law regardless of his personal feelings. |

| I can't believe we are having this discussion! If a restaurant owner refused to serve a mixed couple would that be tolerated? What if an air line refused to fly a mixed couple? Is that legal? Or what if a bank refused to loan money to a mixed couple? Clearly race is a protected class and you cannot discriminate against race. |

I agree but it is also illegal to discriminate against sexual prefferance... there are too many grey areas that it's hard to establish where to draw the line without contradicting another area.... it comes down to a matter of opinion.

Not true. It is not illegal for the judge to not marry a gay couple unless LA allows it not sure if they do. If a judge in HA turned them away then it would be illegal. |

| Well this guy is obviously an ignorant person, I know very few people who aren't products of interacial parents. I never suffered nor did my sibblings. If anything we gained fro the experience. I also don't think people should be bothered by other peoples ignorance. Than again I think gay people should have the right to marry eachother too. I just don't get why people care what others choose to do. |

Sexual orientation is not a protected class - one of the main reasons states are individually voting on the same-sex marriages. |

In the southeast, we see predominately white women w/ black men. Rarely do you see a black woman w/ white men. When in New England, it's the exact opposite, black woman w/a white man. And it's rarely reversed in these locations (at least by my observations).

I don't care what Chris Rock says, I know a few black women that can give him some serious personal info about me! Ain't nunya bidness!!!
Just like eating all kinds of vegetables, I take on all comers. (No pun intended)
Seriously, 'tis a sad life you lead when you turn down the best thing in life based upon race. There really is no difference when it comes to sex, excitement comes down to how much you enjoy being with someone. Why limit your chances to find a mate? Hell, I'm still searching for 'Miss Right', but I'll gladly take 'Miss Thang' while I'm looking. It's all good!
PS - The judge should have been punched, but the solution is very easy... Find another judge and complain about this one later. |

I 'dated' (not sure the right word to use there) a woman from Liberia (who grew up in Italy) who never dated any guy who wasn't white. She was all about the white boys

Why limited yourself?

Mandy, I knew a lot of white girls in Mass who dated black men. The basketball team (my boys) did very well for themselves at a mostly white college. |

I was in Milwaukee this past June and I went to SummerFest that host over 700 music groups in 10 days. I saw sooooo many bm/ww on dates and yes I've see wm/bw too but not as a huge numbers.

Not saying it doesn't happen just saying it's very rare around here and I never ever see it. |
