| I have messages stuck in my outbox and cannot delete them. I now cannot send/receive email because of this problem. Has anyone else had this happen and how did you fix it. I think I may have to delete outlook and start over, which is not what I want to do since I have a lot of messages in the inbox and sent items folders I need/want to keep. |

Normally when I can't delete a message from my outbo is because Outlook is in the middle of a send/receive. Someone probably sent you a huge file and it is struggling to bring it in.
First turn off your automatic send/receive (Tools->Options->MailSetup)
Next cancel any active send / receives, exit Outlook and come back in......now try to go to your outbox, go into the message and press send.....you may have to cancel send/receive first if it automatically started when you opened Outlook (bottom right of Outlook is send/receive status).
Check your server (is it in-house exchange server or third party like godaddy?) to see if a big message is coming in that you can delete at the server level.
Important.....backup your inbox NOW!!!!
File -> Import/Export -> Export to a file -> Personal Folder File (.pst) -> Make sure to click the checkbox "include subfolders"
Save it to your hard-drive or better yet to your network incase your PC dies.....if you need to reinstall outlook or move to a new PC you can just import the file, and all your emails/contacts/folders are just like now. |

| Check your SMTP port. Default is 25 but most ISP's block it. I have the same problem at home. At work I can send but at home my ISP blocks port 25. Try these ports instead: 26, 940, 8001 or 80 |

| Your data folder may be too large meaning you need to delete some emails. When it won't let you do that that's a pretty good indication. So, when that happens click on the emails you want to delete, hold the "shift" key down and then hit delete. That should take care of your problem. |

| Sometimes I have to go down to the "details" part of the "send/recieve" icon in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Then go to cancel all, then I can go into my outbox and delete the top email in there which is usually the one holding everything up. |

I'm assuming that you have already restarted? Vista is the biggest piece of shiit ever created. If Windows 7 is not a completely different product that works perfectly, I am buying Macs and never going back to Windows.
As big of a POS as Vista is, when you upgrade to IE8 you create the ultimate POS. Internet Explorer likes to hang open in numerous instances even when you have closed out of it. this causes my Outlook to constantly freeze up. Every time my outlook freezes there is an Internet Explorer application open.
Close all your open windows and then open the task manager to see if Internet Explorer and'or Outlook are showing as open programs. If they are then end the process in the task manager for them and reopen Outlook.
If this does not do it, alot of times running the error scan and correction utility will. It takes several hours depending on your hard drive size. If all this fails you can usually reinstall without removing Outlook and correct the problem. Make sure to back everything up before you reinstall. |

I think I had upgraded to ie8 then changed it back because I was having more issues then before. I haven't had any problems for the last year until now. It's very frustrating. What's even weirder now is that I am getting emails from facebook! not anything else can come through or be sent but somehow I am getting emails from FB! |

Have you restarted your computer? If not, shut it down and restart. Come to think of it, you know it could also be a problem with your mail server and not your PC. |

| When you hold the shift key down and hit delete you'll get a message that pops up and tells you they will be permanently deleted, that was probably the beep you heard. Just go through and delete any you don't need and you shouldn't have that problem again until you get too full. |

| everytime I get a new message my email beeps. I did delete all the items that were in my deleted items folder so that might have been it. I will go back in and delete all other emails I don't need. For some reason I hate doing that like it's such a task! I should just do it as they come in but never do. |

carrie, above
IE8 was released in April of this year (2009), so you could not have had it way back then, unless it was the beta version.
I agree with anyone who posts that IE8 is a POS. I suffered with it for several weeks and switched to Firefox, which has been excellent.
Be sure to uninstall IE8 if you haven't done so. As for your Outlook problem specifically, better advice has already been posted here than I could give.
Good luck.

| When I've had this issue in the past it's because my mailbox is too large and I have to start a new .PST file... usually my .PST file is close to 2GB by the time I need to start a new one. |

hmmm..must have been ie7 last year then, who knows. I'm obviously not a computer person so whatever I upgraded to last year didn't work well with Vista, That is why I said above that I THINK I upgraded IE8, instead of I upgraded to IE8 because I was unsure what I upgraded. All in all the problem is fixed thanks to all that replied. |

Or maybe you just have the Democratic version. You know the one that pretends that everything is great and not a problem, even thou it's crashing down all around you? You should see a message soon that says:

This is exactly the problem. Somewhere around 1.8 gigs your .pst file reaches critical mass and messes up your outlook. For those of you who want to avoid this, take a look at your .pst file for Outlook and check the size.

Your Outlook mail file is full. There is a limit on the size of the file. IE8 has nothing to do with this.
It is stuck in the Outbox because after it is sent it will try to copy and move it over to the Sent box, but the file is full and it cannot add anything. This is usually not a problem when people have Archivin turned on, because it will automatically move old items into another folder, but even that has a limit.
To shrink the file, you'll need to either delete lots of old mail or create new folders and move things into them (if you have things you want to save).
You can create new personal folders via TOOLS-OPTIONS-MAILSETUP-DATA FILES (I make folders for each calendar year). Then move old email from the boxes into these new folders. Then, make sure you turn OFF the "archive" feature individually on those new folders (or the mail will simply be moved back into your original archive box, which is connected to your normal folder). Right-click the new folder and select Properties to turn it off.
When done, compact the original folder in your options so that it shrinks all the wasted space from previous use and cleans up your hard drive.
Each personal folder that you make becomes a separate data file. Unlike your hard drive folders, Outlook's folders and boxes are actually just part of one big file, but as long as you have the archive turned off the new folders will just be on your list and not grow later. You can also choose to hide them from your list, but don't delete the actual files. You can find these on your hard drive with an extension of "PST" in your "Documents and Settings". Leaving Archive on for your master folder will still allow for old mail to be moved from the Inbox, but the Archive box is still a part of your master file, so it doesn't shrink it. Every 6 months or so, you will want to move old mail into one of the other data folders you created and compact the original main folder. |

| I'm just going to have to agree that vista is a horrible faliure and I can't believe I havent tossed my computer out the window by now. I have to convert my documents for those who don't have vista, my programs all love to lock up and NOT RESPOND.... task manager even locks up! Sometimes It wont even let me restart. I have to turn off the tower manualy, and lose whatever info I had up. My computer pauses and thinks WAY too much and Its brand new! Vista is by far the biggest piece o crap..... |

| to be honest when I first got vista I was far from impressed, I down right did not like it at all, still don't like it as much as I liked my windows xp but I've gotten used to it. I really don't have that many problems with it. I did back when I got it, but it seems to have worked out most if not all of the kinks. I think most of the problems I have with my computer now are operator error and not my system. |

also, Carrie- if you are on IMAP delete the account and create a new one. Fastest fix. your server is hanging. IF you are on POP, sorry.
PS get into Vista startup, and turn off all the monitoring crap and any bloatware from the manufacturer. (HP laptops have more spam than Hormel for instance)
