Before them all was Gene Krupa.
Yes, you have to be old to know that.
He was really before my time, but I know his history and his sounds. In the early sixties I had the honor of visiting his joint off Times Square, toward the end of his life.

Ask any of the drummers named in this thread and Gene Krupa's name will come up.

He's right below Charlie Watts in the longevity, right band right time deal...Both could have easily been replaced but knew their role, played it and endured... |

McCartney did play drums on a couple tracks but the world pretty much knows him as a bass player...

I don't think Ringo is ever going to appear on anyones list of 'best of all time.' I think his playing can best be characterized as steady and reliable... and that's all you really need when you have Lennon and McCartney.

No argument there but I think there are plenty of drummers I consider better just because of the music the band played, i.e. drummers for Kansas, Yes, ELP, Tull, Dead, Allmans, Santana, Metallica, etc., bands that played complex music and either forced or allowed the drummer to really show his skills, I never felt the stones allowed Charlie that room(I feel the same about Wyman)...
Speaking of bands, it's time to head on out for a final practice and soundcheck before the party under the storm this evening(I'm sure it'll be videod so you can laugh at us on Monday)...We are not expecting good weather...Be safe and have fun ya'll! |

Ringo was the weak link of the Beatles musically. He was petrified of doing a solo, how can you include someone like that on a list.
Neal Peart, John Bonham & Keith Moon were my favorite 3. I saw Peart in concert one time throw his drumsticks into the 3rd row and do a 5 minute drum solo w his bare hands, Awesome Stuff. I heard Bonham used to do the same thing on 'Moby Dick' occasionally in concert, but he didn't the one time I saw Zeppelin in Concert. Keith Moon was in a league by himself on a lot of stuff he did but you gotta remember Pete Towsend gave him a lot of leeway to do his thing too.
There's a guy named Michael Lee who played w a bunch of bands in the 90's & 2000's (Page & Plant, The Cult, Echo & The Bunnymen, Thin Lizzy). He could bang the drums w the best of them. See Below;

Exactly some bands need a drummer who can keep the vibe and be more of an arranger than anything else. If you look at the greatest bands of all time in any genre, you will find this type of drummer to be in the band. |
