I want to learn a language as quickly and effectively as possible. I am thinking of using Rosetta Stone but just saw that its $500. So, before I buy, I wanted to know anyone has had any success with it or any other system. I don't have time to take a class but I have the discipline to study at home.

Is this the best system out there or just the best marketed?

I'm messing with it in my spare time. It's Mandarin. Means "Hello, I am fine!"

It's the closest I could come to "Hi, I'm happy with it"

That is the one I want to get. My wife just hired a nanny to help with the kids while she goes back to school. Because she heard the cliche about the husband running off with the nanny, she hired a fat, old, mexican lady who doesn't speak english which is great for our marriage but horrible to communicate with.

It's really not as good as they rave about on TV, but it's pretty cool to put on the headphones and have a reason to block out the wife and child at night :)

I'm learning Arabic, and I'm changing my name to Adbullah Ibrahim-Brahim.

Seriously, there is no fast way to learn a language. It takes time and dedication. You can learn a few phrases, but being able to say "where's the toilet?" isn't a whole lot of good if you can't understand the response. If you have a decent knack for languages, a few semesters combined with some foreign travel will work wonders. And travel to the resorts doesn't count; you have to go where no one speaks English.

Rosetta is the worst thing since a prepay penalty.......go download the software from a torrent, and make yourself cry in boredom and clueness-ness.

Go download or buy Pimsleur programs. Those rock! I listen to the Japanese ones in my car everyday on my commute to work.

The Only other language I want to know are: Beer"ski" | Double Crown"ski" | Double Grey Goose-"ski"

Hope U get the drift ..

If they are here in the U.S. buying a home, they absolutely need to be fluent in English as a Standard practice!

If you want to learn French here is a great website to a educational program designed and hosted by a Yale professor, I know that they were using this in Yale in the 90's not sure if they still are. You have to register but it's free and they don't spam you.

http://www.learner.org/resources/series83.html

You may also want to check out the "Speak in a Week" CD collection. You can find them for pretty cheap on Amazon. They have a lot of languages and they are really well done.

Another website that helps teach the basics is http://www.livemocha.com/

It's completely free and it has a community-type feel to it. You can practice your speaking and writing with native speakers around the world.

well, I am definitely not spending the $500 on it. I guess from what I hear, you can get it for free. That is the way to go. My spanish isn't bad, I just need to brush up and be able to communicate with Mamasita.

My wife is from Mexico. I thought about learning Spanish. But, then I'd be able to talk to my mother in-law.

A few of the BO members could really use Rosetta Stone to learn English.

Not sure if Rosetta Stone helps with grammar, syntax & spelling.

That's hilarious. My 2 1/2 year old watched Dora, and Diego all the time, and it's a little odd to hear him pick up on Spanish words as they are doing stuff. Tico is cool, but he has no fingers! Swiper is where its at!!

I 2nd this recommendation. Pimsleur is a great resource for learning the basics for any language and is a heckuva lot cheaper than Rosetta Stone. They have a lot of different languages too... my mom learned Swahili before she went to Kenya and it helped her out quite a bit.

Neat site, I'll spend more time there I'm sure.
I downloaded Spanish Rosetta Stone torrent to try and didn't care for it.

I think to really learn it helps to be face to face with someone. I used to practice my Spanglish with a Mexican RE agent in our building. He was lacking in English skills, I had almost no Spanish skills. We both improved, he mucho more than I.

Yeah, I found that site a few months ago and at the time they only had a couple languages. It's great that they have expanded. It's similar to Rosetta Stone in a few ways but the big way they differ is that they have a translation available, something that goes against the RS philosophy. Plus it's free so even though it's not perfect it's a great resource.

I likes the Pimsleur language program, I used them all Berlitz, you name it!

Listen to one each night for 45 min after a year you start to get pretty good. If you live in Los Angeles the Beverly Hills lingual institute is also great, went to class just one night a week.

I did not really know how well I understood until I was in a Moscow Taxi and spoke to the Taxi driver for the 50 min ride to the hotel in Russian, once you hit that plateau it gets easier from there,

Isnt Pimsleur just the boring memorization and repeating that Rosetta Stone claims it isnt?

I suggest you to take a class. You can't learn from a CD, you actually learned from conversation and interaction with your classmates etc.

I found it easy to memorize things than the slow book study. How many people come out of college with 4 years of a language and can hardly speak it! I could hold my own after just one year of Russian, 4 years of Spanish in college and I can hardly say HOLA!
I am not sure what program worked, I went to Barns and Noble and bought "every" program, did like Pimsleur the most.

I agree, better yet go to that country for 30 days after 6 months of study and that will really help! A good excuse for an extended vacation, maybe the IRS will let you write the trip off, if the trips is for learning and to increase your business skills???

I married an Italian and her family lives in the Veneto region, so I bought the Italian course. You need to commit to it. It isn't something you can do a tyour computer while pretending to be working. You have to be totally engaged or you won't get anything out of it.

It works. Great for unemployed people. The part one class should take a month.

The best way is to date a girl that speaks the language. It's Mamacita by the way. I'm learning spanish from my mamacita now. So far have picked up Japanese and tagalog that way too.
