In an effort to lighten things up (surprised?)...

I thought I would ask what each of you would dream/want for your retirement from the mortgage industry.

Mine is quite good, pretty much family centered, and making me appreciate every day even more.

I was fortunate, because we did many, many things earlier in life that folks only aspire to do in their retirement. We still take trips across the country, hit a casino now and then, go to sporting events and plays, etc. The tomatoes and peas in our small garden in the back yard are coming along well.

Intercontinental travel, cruises, and dinner parties don't hold an allure for me now, although we did take a National Geographic Society trip in Alaska on a small boat three years ago, and have been to Culebra the last two Christmases (and will visit that island off the eastern coast of PR this coming winter, God willing). Those trips are with our daughters and sons and their families.

Please, please don't think I am bragging, I also have had hardship in life. But I am trying to set the stage for your individual visions of retirement, and really look forward to them.

I hope y'all accept this as a positive and open invitation.

A big boat (42-46') and a condo with a Marina in Florida. Florida Gator season tickets. Excellent health for my husband and I to enjoy both.

Might need to add "winning the lottery" to achieve this, but looks promising without this added wish.

As far as how I will spend my retirement years, it is still too far off to make plans yet. Barring some unforeseen catasphrophe, I will be fine financially but how I will use all my free time is unknown. I doubt I will spend my retirement years posting on an internet forum. God help me if I do.

You will achieve it.

They have cows in KY?

Btw, my son's step father in law (now deceased) flew his plane under the big bridge* in Baltimore once. I think you can give a whoop for that.

*From his obit: Fred's lifelong interest in aviation is reflected in part by his authorship of a children's book called Amelia, and recalling his own daring flight upside down under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Marylanders will testify that this was an awesome feat.

Scrooge,

I remember when I started in banking going to lunch with a few old farts (which almost suddenly I am one) and everybody asked each other what he wanted most. One answered that he wished that his home was paid for.

I thought that was so silly at the time.

I think you are wise beyond your (presumed) years.

I have another 32 years if I retire @ 60, but my retirement is fly fishing in montana all summer and surfing all winter in Costa Rica at a quit little resort that I own... 5 room with a bar... Also it includes having my grand kids and kids stay with us and also volunteering in Costa Rica to give something back. I also will contuinue my election juding and volunteer work here in the states, there will also be lots of parting and a 3 month cruise that hits all the major ports in the world... I would also like to hit a NBA fianls, Super Bowl, Masters, Tennis Major, and a final four...

if the house is paid off, i can cash out 100% on a stated 2/28 and lose it to foreclosure. that would be cool!

thanks for the encouraging words. i get the idea to pay off the house from some very content type people i run into every now and again. nothing better in life then to be able to live each day cause you want to, then cause you have to.

youve only been retired a short while. i think you are enjoying yourself. but do you think you really needed to retire? couldnt you just have got rid of the office and slowed down a lot? i know you did some nice flips, and dabbled in real estate across the board. 1 or 2 or those a year is a great hobby for retirement i would think.

Scrooge,

You know, once in a while, the old entreprenurial ghost visits me, and I think of all the ways to make money, in the mortgage business and out.

I've developed land, owned a nursing home, wrote books, been in banking, started a mortgage company, etc, and that type of adventure still beckons, I admit.

I often think, if I could align myself with all of the ex mortgage brokers and LO's here and across the nation, and put togrether a common business venture, how tremendous that would be. I think of hundreds of people aligned in a common pursuit.

Then I roll over and sleep for a few more minutes in the morning.

I can't imagine not working as I enjoy having to be somewhere each and every day. Retirement savings of financial importance but I hope to die the day I am no longer able to work.

Good health for yourself and your loved ones is the best you can hope for out of life. I hope to spend my golden years in good health surrounded by the laughter of grand children.

I have done a decent amount of travel in my life and to date have visited 47 out of 50 states. I have always thought it would be interesting to take 4+ years and spend one month in each state with no leaving the state boundary for the entire length of my stay. I have expressed this plan to others in the past and they have always asked me why I would want to spend an entire month in a state like Nebraska or Delaware? I figure, why not. I enjoy the quiet rhythms of life as much as the flash and glitz. Each state has its own beauty and places to discover. During my journey, I would compile notes and observations that would be the basis of my book describing the experience. If no one buys the book, who cares. We are all getting rich writing mortgages anyway. Right?

I plan on retiring on our ranch in San Juanito, Chihuahua. It's high in the sierra near the Copper Canyon. 400+ acres deeded with an additional 2500 acres that are allowed for our use by the Mexican Government. We already run goats, sheep and cattle on it and it has a fish hatchery on the backside of the ranch. It is the most beautiful and peaceful place I know.

Mine would be to see kids be successful and happy. house paid off and live off of investments. Spend as much time as humanly possible with my wife, do charity work
for underprivileged kids and finally leave my kids/wife a nice big chunk of change when I check out

How long did you teach. I've got another 10 hours before my first check ride, any advice?
