I've read that there is no upfront mortgage insurance on condos for FHA loans, and that just the 1/2% a year needs to be paid. Is that correct?

no. and fha doesnt just do any condo out there. you have to check and make sure the complex is on the list.

condo property type have the same insurance as SFR's, used to be different a few years ago.
condos ethier need to be HUD approved or Spot approved.
