Search for: Getting Cheap Newsprint as printing paper?.

I just visited a paper store where I picked up 8 1/2 X 14
inches white, good postcard quality, for just $10. I got
2 stacks for $5 each with over 400 sheets (1 sheet can be
cut into 4 postcards) that would give me 1,400 postcards
for printing. These are the sheets that were left off from
customs cutting for one of their printer customers. The same
buy would have cost me $140 or more at Office Depot, Staples,
or even at Kelly Paper at least $70 even with lower less white
quality paper.

So, I talked to one of the cutters there. He told me that
the cheapest way to replace my legal sized and letter sized
bright white paper which I use for printing rate sheets,
lenders' guidelines, and for processing 1003/1008 forms etc,
is to order special cuts on newsprints. The quality of the
paper is good enough for reading although the paper itself
will be thin and not bright white, but one could save
a lot considering that one legal sized paper of 8.5" x 14"
Bright White (92 brightness and 20 lbs) under Georgia
Pacific brand is costing me $7 at Wallmart or a little less
at Kelly Paper. Using the newsprint which is a lower quality
paper but good enough for reading and processing would cost
me about $3 per pack of the same standard size that we all
get from Office Depot, Staples, Wallmart, or Kelly Paper.
And if you call the paper store (which customs cut for print
shops) to see if they have discarded newsprints that were
not picked up by their print shop customers then you could
even have a better deal.

But I am not sure if the newsprint-cut paper would work
with the fax machine as the paper may be too thin, and I am
not sure if my HP All-In-One can really print it and pull it
in without jamming it. If the paper is too thin, this could
be a problem. So, I am going to get some samples and try it.

Anyone has the experience of using cheap newsprint for
printing to lower the costs of paper in loan processing and
general printing in our loan business?

Do you use a lot of paper Peter? I just don't know if the hassle and inconvenience would be worth it to save, I don't know, $20 a month. I can sometimes get a ream of paper for under $4 at Big Lots. Do you have those in your area??

Rita, thanks, but I don't know about Big Lots. Do you
have their website. I will see if they are in SF Valley.

I myself don't use a lot of paper, but I am trying to
find out for my office colleagues and my broker as well.
We have well over 30 paper-consuming realtors and L/Os in
our shop and we are trying to find ways to reduce office
expenses these days. If we could save $100-$200 a month
on the cost of paper, then we should. I myself could save
$20-$50 a month and that would be good to use this amount
to place a small ad in a local church newsletter to get
cutomers instead of throwing away the $20 to $50 into
the expensive paper that is a luxuary of the past.

I've noticed that appraisers do use a lot of good paper
too and there should be room for savings for appraisers to
use newsprint paper instead if the printing quality is
acceptable. In this age of paperless technology, the
quality of the paper is much less important than the result
and the content.

Rita, thanks for Big Lots. I just found their website and
there is one in Canoga Park near to me. I will go there to
see if there are good deals this week. Looks like they are
into furniture mostly.

I buy it by the case from Officemax, their 20lb paper is $33.19 a case/10 reams. I found them cheaper than Office Depot. We don't have many Staples here.

Anyway, I buy it on the web. They deliver it free if my order is over $50 and within 20 miles of a store.

That sounds like a hell of a deal. Peter call first, see if they have any so you don't waste gas. Mine is right down the street, on my way to the freeway so no wasted gas if they don't have any that day.

Thanks, Ron, and at that price with Office Max, the paper
quality must be better than the newsprint. I would buy it
to for $33 and something it is the best buy in terms of
quality-to-price ratio. I've never been to Office Max but
checking on-line, there is one store about 17 miles from
where I am. Great find, Ron, and I will brief my broker and
my colleagues.

You should do what they do at public schools and give your people a key code that equals "X" number of sheets a month, and that way it forces people to conserve.

I buy paper from quill.com and capofficeproducts.com - they both run specials occasionally and I stock up on paper when they do. They are both discount office supply companies.

Are you talking about the paper I used to use in elementry school? It's really thin and flimsy? I would stay away from it, and if possible look for cuts else where.

Its their regular brand of 20 Lb. copy paper. I use it in my laser printer, copier and fax. You don't have to go to the store.

Just order it from their web site. It will save the time and trouble of driving to the store, not to mention the cost of gas.

WB Mason. They will either match or beat competition prices plus free next day delivery.

Cory, WB Mason is welknown on the East Coast especially
in New York area. Too bad, they are only servicing from
Maine to Philadelphia and not on the West Coast. Their
website looks like they are strictly an on-line mail order
house.

Thanks,

Peter
