Depends what you consider 'great'...I like people like Jerry Garcia, ****ey Betts, Warren Haynes, Eric Clapton, Stills, N. Young and SRV...They specialize(d) in putting their heart and soul into every note...

For heavier players, I only like the innovators, the rest are copies or combinations of Hendrix, Page, May and Van Halen...I'd like to throw Mustaine and Hetfield in there for starting speed metal, but they can't be in the same catagory as those gods of rock, IMHO...

For the lighter sound, Al Dimeola has been in my collection for almost 30yrs...

Can't believe I didn't notice Santana was not on there. Good call!

I would personally remove a couple, Lita Ford and Mick Mars for starters.

Dimebag is f'n nuts - I miss Pantera. Ritchie Blackmore. Alex Lifeson has rhythm that can't be matched by many. Dave Mustaine just fast, that's it. EVH is his own. It's not his equipment, it's Eddie.

Kirk Hammett? Yeah, whatever.

Some very legendary guitarists have been named....
DiMeola
Page
Hendrix
Santana
Van Halen
Segovia
Clapton
etc

Even these legends defer to one man....

Django Reinhardt

To those who have never picked up a guitar of their own, he is unheard of or at best an obscure Gypsy that has faded into history. To those who play, he has no equal. I have played for 16 years, in every guitar circle I have encountered, one name inspires reverence like no other... Django. For those of you who are not familiar, I encourage you to investigate the man and his music. It will be an eye opener.

I have to say, I've been playing in bands for over 30yrs, collected and studied music since I was in the 1st grade and never heard of him or heard, or read, any one ever mention his name as an influence...I just watched some youtube stuff on him, definitely good but not sure what level of influence he really had...I've followed, Myles Davis, Dimeola, Clarke, Coltrane and the like but never heard of this guy...

While the Stones are truly a great band, they are an example of a group being far superior to the sum of their parts. Richards and Wood are second tier players at best.

You're right on with Stevie Ray and Shepard though.

You may not know this name, but you know it's history.
Tommy Allsup

He's the guy who "Lost" the coin toss to Buddy Holly and had to ride the tour bus. Not only did he record with Buddy Holly, he's still one of the greatest studio guitarists with over 6,500 sessions and a Grammy to show for it.

He makes it out here every year and still amazes me at age 76.

Jorma Kaukonen (I make sure I catch his act whenever he and Cassidy play McNears in Sebastopol)

David Gilmore
Neil Young (acoustic finger style is amazing.)

BB King
Bobby "Blue" Bland
Eva Cassidy
Robert Johnson
Rosetta Tharpe
George Benson
Gregg Allman (I think it was Gregg on lead)
Jose Feliciano

Man, there's a lot to choose from. I guess it depends on your taste in music.
