Paying for a car: maintenance, note, insurance, gas is much like paying a mortgage these days.

Big story on Vespas in our local paper today. It would be fine around here for a few months of the year.

I drive my wife's car back and to work each day, My cadilac sits in the garage, week ends though or when we go out I drive the Cady. Her car gets 12 to 13 days on a full tank of only 12 gallons, my Cady on the other hand gets me 4 to 5 days on a 23 gallon tank. The Oil Companies are still making record profits.

The only way it will get better is if the Gov can figure a way to strenghen the Dollar.

My Acura gets about 29 MPG on the highway at speeds

from 70 to 90 MPH. I have never really tried driving it

at 50-55 MPH, I am not sure if that will help conserve fuel

or not, but I am going to give it a try and see what happens.

The faster you drive, the sooner you get there, saves gas right?

Some of you kids out there [a little Don Cherry lingo there] don't remember the passage of the National speed limit of 55 mph which was designed to save fuel.

Carter also turned the heat down in the White House to save energy costs and would wear sweaters as a result. He also installed solar panels on the White House roof. Solar panels that Reagan had promptly removed upon taking office. Carter was not very good at many things during his one term Presidency but he may have been ahead of the curve on energy conservation.

It really depends on the vehicle, my Land Rover is rated at 17 MPG

highway, I recently got 18.34 MPG driving it at 65-70 MPH. That vehicle

has a lot of air drag compared to the Acura, so a slower highway speed

might increase fuel economy a good deal more.

Amen! I also don't feel sorry for some 20 yr old kid with an Escalade and spinners paying for all that fuel. The Escalade seems to be the status symbol of choice around here for the young ones. I bet with gas, payments and insurance it's more than $1000 a month.Friggin brilliant!

Well, I don't really want any one to feel sorry for me anyway.

I bought the SUV for my teenage girls to drive, because I wanted

them in somthing really solid, in case they got in a car wreck.

I have no regrets, and thank the lord, no wrecks yet.

I breath a bit easier, knowing they are more safe,

in that vehicle though.

If you drive 55 in Atlanta, you're likely to get run over by a big rig going 75 in the two right lanes or by a car changing lanes going 80... so be careful.

OK- its funny this thread came up because I've been watching my fuel gauge and freaked out this morning. I had exactly a half-tank yesterday morning and I drove from the west suburbs to the north shore... then to old town in the city and back to the west suburbs. (all chicago folks) I realized that even though I didn't drive more than 60 miles the traffic absolutely killed me in gas. It was a 35-40 day in gas alone! Crap- I'm gonna start having customers come to my office more often just to save $$$ on gasoline!

I freaking drive my Wifes Beater to work and I can get about 35 miles per gallon out of it. The only Problem it a elantra wagon from 97 so it turns heads when people see me in it with a 3 piece suit on . I am like damn this thing is killing my image. My sequioa and maxima just sit at the house and my wife may drive one of them to go to the store or something but that is really it. She really has been walking a lot more or cycling!

I find it interesting how everyone goes after "Big Oil". Yes, they make record profits, but their profit margin is about 10%, while Google's is over 25%! Anyone wanting to go after "Big Google" as well for driving up our paid search costs?

The ONLY way we will get a handle on gas prices is simply to DRILL for more oil in the US. I listen to all the lame brain liberals who want energy independence, yet won't vote YES on any bill that actually lets us drill for oil. Plus, they want to take away the tax breaks that ":Big Oil" gets. Sounds like revenge, eh? But, if they do that, Big Oil will reduce their domestic drilling, as those tax breaks are for DOMESTIC drilling only. Thus, the liberals are truly freakin idiots. All they want is the vote of the stupid Americans who believe in their hype, yet all their plans will simply increase our dependence on oil from our friends in Saudi Arabia, Venuzuela and other socialist dictatorships.

Oil and gas are going up because of increased GLOBAL demand and from speculators. The moment the US announces it will start drilling in ANWR and in other "off limit" areas, speculators will dump their oil holdings, and there will be an immediate drop in the price, well before any oil even hits the market.

Now, if any of you who are complaining vote for Dems for as your senator or representative, or even for President, you did indeed vote for the higher oil and gas prices. It is the liberal policy to not drill for more oil in the US, or even to build more refineries so that we can refine oil into gas.

So, stop complaining and actually DO something in November about it.

PS:

I forgot to add that John McCain is also opposed to drilling in the US, but as we all know, he too is a liberal. Thus, basically, as far as gas prices are concerned, we are screwed for 4 or 8 years. Ugh!

My gas expense is like Zero this year :-) Gotta love the subways, trains & light rail....Pretty much can get anywhere I need to go out here without a car, or if one is needed, I call a cab. Everyone complains about the cost of living in the NYC area, but when you factor out the fact that you can survive very easily without a car, insurance and gas costs, it makes it much more affodable than one would think!

$81 for an unlimited use 30 day metro card (NYC Subways). Pretty sweet deal :-)
$2.00 per ride, each way (regardless of distance) if you'd prefer to not do a monthly pass and ride infrequently.

Unless they've changed the price I think a monthly MTA pass is less than a hundred bucks.

I picked up a 2000 Volkswagon New Beetle Diesel. It gets 43- 50 mpg. My wife drives it. Not a bad car, rides good and has leather/sunroof - the works - She was driving an SUV, and now we are spending $475 less per month on fuel.
