Today was the due date for my first child. My wife and I are both quite stressed as she can not sleep because of the baby's size and position. I can't sleep because of her having to wake up every few hours as well as her overall discomfort hurts me as well.

I went to the doctor today and he said most likely the baby might have to be induced. I hope we can welcome our baby home soon, I have never had this kind of suspense. Did anyone else here have a similar situation? Any advice?

dont induce just yet. This is why it's very important to calculate the amount of weeks.
Most doctors/hospitals will DEMAND you to do a C-section.
They make a lot of money doing this.

tell her to walk around the house....
too bad you cant check to see if she's dilating.

most women (from what i heard) have their babies after HOURS of having their water break.

Congrats in advance, I hope everything goes smoothly for mom and baby (and you of course).

We were fortunate in that our doctor allowed us to basically schedule a time to have both of our kids. Both water breakages right in the comfort of our own hospital room. Pretty stress-free that way!

My wife was overdu about a week and a half with our first...Huge and very uncomfortable.

The worst is when everyone calls just to 'see' if she had the baby yet, but when she answers they say "oh, so your still around...".

Richard (rtrefflich) just had a recent birth that I think was past the due date. You should see if he has any insight for the father to be.

And congrats dude!!!

My wife is 8 months and we have been asking around about this as well. One woman swore that walking backwards, stamping your feet will do the trick. She apparently heard it from a midwife. She says it worked like a charm for her. If you try it and it works let me know. C-Sections are BS and carry a lot more risk.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I had my 1st a bit over a year ago, and they scheduled it so I knew when it was happening.
It was the most AMAZING thing EVER!!!

I was sitting there like Johnny Bench waiting to welcome my daughter into the world.
I had my wife's leg over one shoulder while I was watching... then without notice...
Doc handed me the scissors to cut the tube...TALK ABOUT AN UNFORGETABLE EXPER!!!

P.S. Bring an air mattress, because your woman will be out cold in bed that night, and you'll be sleeping on the most uncomfortable piece of **** furniture ever!!!

old wise tale but, have her walk around in the bath tub in warm water up to her ankles...it worked for me, I went into labor with my first one 5 hours after I did that. Good luck...this is always the most stressful time, but it is worth it in the end.

Best of luck to you...As others have said, I would try everything else before inducing. Not to scare you, but my first child was induced and it was a very sudden, hard process...no warming up. Just immediate wammo that lasted for 8 hours! Again, sorry for the candidness, but wish someone had told me the truth before hand...You will be fine and I'm sure in good hands with the advice from your professionals. Trust your gut.

I won't scare you with my story of being in labor for 44 hours with my first.

well my second child had to be induced, but that was because she was 2 weeks late!!!! remember, a baby could be born 2 weeks earlier and up to 2 weeks later.....

At least when you induced, you know the baby is on its way.... The suspense of waiting for labor can drive you nuts... I can't forget how many times my husband asked me, after the due date, do you feel anything yet... Haha

Best of luck to you both...everything will be fine

I was in your shoes almost 1 year ago. Have her walk around a little if she can. Go to the mall or do something to keep your mind off of it. It is going to happen when it happens. We were almost 2 weeks late and my wife had the baby 2 days before they were going to induce. Congrats

Congrats.

I see you are in SD, is the hospital somewhere in Calrsbad/Encinitas, we have had our two at Scripps Mercy and it has been great.

My wife just had our second two weeks ago on Wed. The first was the real challenge, we had to do the C-Section after 36 hours of labor and nothing. The baby was 9lbs 13oz and my wife is like 5'6 or 5'4 or something, I honestly don't know.

The second one was born naturally but weighed 7lbs 5oz, much better for her. He is doing good.

You don't have to worry about her being induced if it is around her due date, the challenge with waiting much longer after is that the baby will grow and then you may need to do the c-section.

Congrats,

You are receiving a lot of good advice. My wife and I are expecting our 9th child in June. The best thing to do is to be calm. My wife had the same issue of going over due. It is alot more common than you think. Walking and sex are all good things to do. I found the best thing for my wife was to relax and watch a few movies, back to back. It will happen when you least expect it. Like someone else says pack the bags and put them in the truck. Have your doctors phone number on speed dial.

Good Luck! Have you picked a name yet?

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It is very reassuring to hear all of your thoughts. The baby is a girl and her name is Melissa. We got the bags packed and have the child seat in the car. It is an interesting time to have a baby with the way the market is, I am working overtime to make sure I have some money in the bank.

We are not doing a c-section, we have a great doctor that likes vaginal deliveries.

Congrats!
I had a severe reaction to induction with my 1st & went from 2-8 cent in 1 hour. 3 hours total from start to delivery. No time for epidural. It was to hell & back. My 2nd was not induced & I had a normal 7 hour labor. It still hurt, but was nothing like with the 1st. I heard walking & spicy food will help trigger labor. I also heard that when the doctor checks for dialation it gets thing sgoing.

Good luck!

I have had 4 children and 4 months pregnant with my 5th. NY husband and I have sex all the way up to delivery. It worked 3 out of the 4 times. It also keeps her stretchy so she does not get stitches. If she were to rip when the lil bambino comes out....!!! You are outta gas for a while man. Never had a stitch in my life!

Hint: WARNING! KINDA GRAPHIC (DISCLAIMER)
IF she is not feeling comfortable in inner course cause of her size and stuff, do it on the side laying down. Don't be banging it either or you might get swung on!! It aint about you, (although you may benefit, lol. Just deep penetration alone can induce labor.
Also nipple stimulation can also induce labor as is releases oxytocin which is something like what the doctor gives when he induced at the hospital. Good Luck!!

Read true statistics:

Nipple stimulation is the gentle rubbing or rolling of the nipple to encourage the start of contractions. The theory is that oxytocin, a hormone that causes contractions, is released in the body when the breasts are stimulated.

Is it safe?
Nipple stimulation has been reported to produce very strong contractions and for this reason you should use it with care. However, a study of 719 women found that there were no problems of this sort following nipple stimulation.

Does it work?
The study mentioned above was thought to be too small to draw concrete conclusions from, but did show a significant benefit from nipple stimulation: 37.3 per cent of women who had tried it went into labour within 72 hours as compared to just 6.4 per cent of those who had not.

I don't think guys like it "stretchy." Doctors don't call the extra stitch the "daddy stitch" for nothing.

BTW Hayden, (are you who I think you are?), my first child is named Melissa. Good choice. =)

I've got three little ones.

1st - we induced. Ended up having the cord wrapped around her neck and we had emergency c-section. Scary but thrilling.
2nd - planned c-section. Awesome. Nothing beats having an Outlook reminder telling you tomorrow you are having a baby
3rd - water broker when she was with her mom at the movies. We rushed to the hospital only to wait 24 hours to have the kid.

Anyway, get your rest, my man. That baby knows more than the dr's believe it or not. But, our ob/gyn say there is no benefit beyond 40weeks. just my $.02

Congrats!

The emergency c-section was tense. My wife was crying, my mom, her mom and I am pretending to be calm and cool when i was freaking out on the inside.

Just trust your dr, trust technology and trust medicine and trust your god (if you have one). Oh, and be sure to report back!

When you come back, be sure to message me about credit repair. I have a couple candidates (including myself)

Sorry.

I have two wonderful children.
The first delivered c-section...looked really weird coming out of my wife's mid section. Labor was 30+ hours. Recovery for my wife was long and painful. I'd advise going natural, if at all possible.

Second born with little complication and only hours in labor. (easy for me to say)

There we go, back on track!

Congrats on #1! The ride is getting better...

Rub her nipples! No joke. Learned this in La Maz (?) class. It encourages her body to release a drug called Petocin. (sorry not sure if that's the right spelling). Anyway it is the same drug they use to induce labor. Good luck and congrats!
