Any motor heads in here that can give me advice?
I've rebuilt a small block Ford in auto mechanics back in high school, I've constantly worked on my jeeps over the years, but I'm completely lost when it comes to "WHERE DO I BEGIN" with a 351 small block build up?
Do I start with the intake and work my way back to the exhaust?
Turbo vs. super? I want 450hp max, can I do that naturally aspirated?
Any tips or advice you can give me would be much appreciated! |

Hey, are you a jeep junkie too? We've got a 1942, used in the war, that we're (my husband's) re-building. |

Winsor or Cleveland? The two engines have very different characteristics & deficiencies. |

Sorry, yes, Windsor. I shouldn't have left that out.
All I'm finding is a bunch of mustang forums on it, can I use the same upgrades such as headers, exhaust manifold, etc. that they mustang owners use?
Oh yeah, big Jeep Junkie! I've owned 7 of them over the years, even my first car was an 82 scrambler. My last was a 2001 turbo charged 4.0L on 38's moved on 5.18 gears! Loved every minute of it.
But now I got this bronco and I really don't know where to begin. I've ordered all the interior upgrades, headliner, new leather seats from a Buick, carpet kit, door panels, stereo, and a bunch of little things such as gauges and GPS.
But the engine seems overwhelming (the 351W), it's like there's too much to pick from. Any tips on how to get 400-450hp with the least amount of work that will go the longest amount of time? |

I'll ask the man. He's got the brains, I've got the looks. :-o
Ever do a parade with the jeeps? |

I had an old 75 LTD Police Cruiser.
It depends how you have it hoisted up. If you have it hoisted over your head on a lift or you have a pit, go from the manifold back. If you are crawling under it, go from the exhaust back.
Those are actually easy engines to work on. Ford made that engine for 35 years, so you shouldn't have problem finding a book. Look on Ebay or Amazon. |

| No, no parades. But I did do Moab! That's really something up there. |

| The heads are a major weak point. Back in the day, one would put Cleveland heads on a Windsor, and vrooom. Now, not so much. If the budget allows, go with aluminum heads and a port matched intake manifold. Of course, changing the heads would necessitate new headers...all the better to not bottleneck all that new flow. |

I did order the book. I'm more wondering what is the best overall method to get 400-450hp out of the engine? The turbo on my jeep caused a TON of heat and I was sure it wouldn't run for a long time. Would a roots style charger with 8lbs PSI hinder the 351W dramitically? Is it necessary? Would boring it over or getting a stroke kit be a better way to go?

I found a pretty sick set of polished aluminum heads on Ebay with 200cc's of head space for 600 bucks. Is this a good deal?

I would not know. I haven't messed with a Ford in years, just puttin' my .02 in.
If you are going to gut it, this sounds good: http://www.mustang50magazine.com/techarticles/0607_m5lp_1969_ford_351_windsor/index.html
If you are going to put a pump on it, the heads would still be a weak point. |

David, here is a history of the 351 Windsor/Cleveland motors, along with a build-up story. If you get "why" the 351C came about, you will have a much better understanding of where to start your supe-up.
Good luck!

Yeah, I'm a motorhead....and I've seen them about 5 times. |
