I KNOW this hasn't anything to do with mortgages, but I just wanted to 'vent' about it.....

What in the world was an 18 yr old girl/woman doing having breast augmentation surgery? She wasn't recovering from a disfiguring disease, etc.

I had an experience when I was waiting for my mother to come out of a plastic surgeon's office (she had some skin cancers removed and is fine now) that I observed a mother with her 16 yr old daughter 'picking out' the daughter's new breasts out of a book in the waiting room! Apalling and so stupid!

In case you don't know what i'm talking about, please read the article at this link.... http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=4520099 .

May God bless this woman's soul and I hope her parents do not destroy each other in the inevitable grief and possible guilt.

Have a nice day.

Yeh that was here in Boca, people were saying she was having implants, but it was actually a procedure for a disorder she had....forgot the name, something to do with inverted nipples and some other complication (no joke).

i just read that her nipples were not the same size nor were her breasts and the procedure was to correct that..... many young women have this situation.... it's just a shame that she felt she needed it to be done and now she is being mourned!

I saw this on the news this morning. The girl died of a hypotherma that happens in some surgeries.
When a person has surgery sometimes the body temp drops to very low levels under general ans. This only happens to small number of people and it is just coming out.

Years ago I had know knee surgery was put under, and the next thing I remember is that they had at least 2 warming blankets and a heaters on me. I was told that I a reaction to the Ans.

This girl in Boca was having a procedure to fix an inverted nipple like Chris Cheney said. It's been in the papers and on TV for 2 days here. It was not plastic surgery so she could look cool. What I thought was crazy was that their attorney was Johnny-On-The-Spot as soon as they rushed her to the hospital.

This is all i am saying.... it's a shame that she died having such a procedure done when it was not medically needed....

from the Sun Sentinel....

'Though many friends thought she was having a breast enlargement, the family's attorney said she was doing it because of inverted nipples and asymmetry — procedures that aren't medically necessary but often are done for self-esteem reasons.'

It's just a shame!

Why is everyone blaming the parents? First off the daughter probably had the worst self image for her whole life, very poor self esteem, and had waited until SHE WAS AN ADULT for the procedure...It's a shame that she died during what would typically be a "routine" surgery, but she was an adult. Her parents couldnt have stopped her if they wanted to.

Well.... officially she was an 'adult'..... had she been my daughter i would have attempted at my strongest level to talk her out of it.....

Am i BLAMING them? noooo but.... they will for sure feel responsible forever that they didn't do more to talk her out of the procedure....

There is no 'routine' way of going under.... it's not natural.... while the surgery itself didn't kill her (i.e. she didn't bleed to death etc...) the procedure of going under and the complications in a doctor's office rather than in a hospital did kill her....

Anyway....

shame

Its her parrents fault she ended up with irregularities it was their genes that made this happen its all there fault.

Come on seriously... I know quite a few women(friends)who have had this surgery to boost there self-image. Either they lost weight and wanted a lift or were big bottom girls and wanted to ballence that out. Its not like you can go out and exercise to fix that issue.

People go tanning, get teeth whitening, put braces on there childrens teeth contorting them for years in some cases. Straighten, perm and color hair. Get color contacts, wear glasses/contacts buy gucci and prada and "brand name clothing" ect, all in the name of physical appearance. Why is it that if a women wants to fix some part ofher body that she is uncomfortable with it is all of the sudden a "bad" thing???

so i am the only one here that sees that it will be inevitable that her parents will feel responsibility the rest of their lives? how it is getting twisted around is kind of funny....

it IS a bad thing travis when they are not even finished their growth and they are already wanting to go under the knife..... it is my opinion that this is a bad thing.... you have your opinion and i have mine... btw your smartelic remark about blaming the parents for genetic issues is ridiculous and uncalled for....

I can see if you had one breast being a size c cup and the other breast being an a cup. Then yes have the surgery. Because you guys can't say that you would date or marry a woman with this problem. Honestly.

I will say that all the women I know that got things fixed were over 21 and there bodies had stoped growing in any positve way. I am with you on the fact that people should not be adjusting there body image untill they have stopped growing. I have yet to get lasik because my eyes have not finished messing with me and have not yet had 2 years with out a prescription adjustment.
However like you said people have there own opinions and for some 18yrs old is old enough.

What I don't get is how is this the parents fault aside from there genes. Shoot my parents gave me asthma, a freak of nature metabolism and my gorgeous locks of dirty blond hair LOL. Do I blame them because they had me on medication to help my asthma so that i could play baseball with the neighborhood kids, fed me a high calorie diet so that i did not look like a toothpick(only got to bean pole size anyway)just trying to make my life as normal as possible? NO

That is all they probably wanted to do is have there child finally live a happy life and not be so self concious that she would not want to go to the beach in a bathing suit and tan because of her "issue"...Just playing devils advocate here so don't beat me up over the issue.

I do feel for them it must be hard to lose your child at any age and especially during a corrective surgery that was supposed to improve her daily life and self image.

I wonder where she came up with the money - she was a full time high school student, right? I mean $2,200 (reported price) is alot of money for a person that age....

No beating up....

I will say that to what brandie wrote.... there may be many shallow men out there (as there are alot of shallow women too) that would not like a woman because both breasts are not perfect..... heck... most breasts are not mirror images of one another.... one is typically larger than the other....

Maybe this poor girl was VERY upset about this and got it inot her head that this HAD to happen right NOW to make her life better.... poor thing....

Anyway....

Girls stop growing at the age of 16 on average. So having surgery at 18? Well.. that is a gray area. remember at the age of 18, you can vote, you can fight for your country, and take out a loan. So in govie eyes she is an adult, but to the parents she is still a little girl in their eyes.

I am a parent of two little ones (under the age of 10), so this question of letting my child have an elective surgery when she is older. I can not say at this time because who knows what it will be.

I tell my son and daughter everyday that they even when they are 35 yrs old, married and have their own children, they are still going to be my babies.

yes.... many mom's tell their children just what you've told yours.... i'm sure it is reassuring to the children.... a very loving thing to say....

No she actually suffererd froma reaction where the temp rises to about 105 degrees. Its a rare occurence but most surgeons have the medicine to counteract this reaction right in the OR. This stupid doctor didnt. In most caes in can be reversed and she would lived.

You must have missed the part where she lived here in Boca

I can see why she had the surgery, as girls whether young, teens, or older are very self concious, especally with something like a situation like this. Heck my younger sister got implants as a x-mas present I think for her 19th b-day like 4 or so years ago, can't remember, I didn't think she needed them. We have a joke here in South FL, instead of girls saying lets go to the mall or shopping, lets go get new boobs today lol.

Also there is misinformation, we know the doctor who performed the surgery, they had Dantrolene and administered it which is the only known product that can be used when dealing with MH. But it doesn't work all the time and MH is hard to diagnose as theres multitude of problems that can arise hat are different that can cause similar conditions (as it starts off with muscles tightening etc). They said her case was so servere and sudden as her condion worsened quicker then MH normally does, it wouldn't have mattered if it was performed in a hospital instead (procedure). Majority of breast type surgeries are done out-patient as well. Beleive me this doctor has the credentials and is well known throughout the US. Unfortunetley stuff happens in that line of work.

It's shameful that girls, young ladies and old ladies play into the hype of low self esteem and making the psychiatrist, plastic surgeons and attorneys super rich. What happen in love who you are "a different seed produce a different weed". I see although extreme unnecessary surgery as body mutilation if it doesn't relate to losing life or limb.

This whole story and thread is crazy! I'm still trying to figure out what craziest part of all this is..Is it EMS mentioning "the 16 yr old i observed at my mom's plastic surgeon"?

or this 18 yr old girl getting surgery?

Or according to the article "According to just released data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 348,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2007, a 64 percent increase from 2000.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported that between 2002 and 2003, the number of women and girls younger than 18 who got breast implants nearly tripled, from 3,872 to 11,326."

This whole thing as a WTF....

And somehow mortgage brokers will be blamed for this.

Maybe the parents got a home equity line or did a cash out refi to pay for this. So, ultimately, it is our fault again, right? I think we're going to be blamed for global warming next.

In life, there are risks associated with everything. I should feel bad that someone's vanity resulted in death? I don't think so.

Here's another view in addition to what I said above. Obviously girls have low self esteem in general, the corrective surgery to help her would have given new self esteem. She had inverted nipples and breast different size, something I'm pretty sure a girl isn't comfortable with. For the guys on here, what if you had an inverted penis....your gonna tell me you wouldn't want surgery, or allow your son to have surgery?

We know the doctor, he administered the drug to help her but the drug does not work all the time, especially in case of servirity as hers unfortunetley was. Even if she had been in the hospital it wouldn't have mattered sadly. Its one of the hardest things to diagnose and correct quickly in medicine.

Now excuse me while I go use my trust fund to buy something, maybe an island?....
